How To Install A Barn Door
Wall Strength
-
Make sure the wall can support the weight of the door and track. Reinforce with a timber backing board if needed.
Clearance
-
Ensure there’s enough wall space beside the opening for the door to slide fully open.
Ceiling Height
-
Check that there’s enough vertical space above the doorway for the track and hangers. There needs to be a minimum 180mm clearance between the top of the track and the ceiling.
-
Track Height
-
Typically, the track is mounted about 40–50mm above the door height. Adjust based on your hardware style.
Door Width
-
Your barn door should be at least as wide as the opening, ideally 25–50mm wider for full coverage.
Track Length
-
Use a track that’s at least twice the width of the door for full slide clearance.
-
Level First
-
Use a spirit level to mark a straight line where the track will be mounted.
Secure Fixings
-
Drill into studs or a solid backing board. Use appropriate screws and wall plugs for your surface.
Spacers
-
Most kits include spacers to keep the track offset from the wall—don’t skip these!
-
Pre-drill Holes
-
Mark and drill holes for the hanger bolts based on your hardware’s template.
Even Spacing
-
Ensure both hangers are aligned and evenly spaced from the door edges.
Secure Firmly
-
Tighten bolts securely, but avoid over-tightening which could damage the timber.
-
Lift Carefully
-
With help, lift the door and place the hangers onto the track.
Test Movement
-
Slide the door back and forth to check for smooth operation and alignment.
-
Track Stoppers
-
Install at both ends of the track to prevent the door from sliding off.
Floor Guide
-
Mount a guide at the base to keep the door from swinging. Choose from wall-mounted or groove-style guides depending on your door.
-
Check for Level
-
Ensure the door hangs straight and slides evenly.
Handle Installation
-
Attach handles or pulls at a comfortable height, avoiding interference with the track.
